Very confusing tax regulations

Filed under: News, Personal Ramblings — hendrikch @ 1:13 am

Disclaimer: All posts below are strictly based on what I know as far as I can remember on top of my head. Any amount, claims, theory, rumors you read below may or may not be correct, so do your own research before assuming what I said below are right.

In recent days, there has been an uprising of discussion among Indonesian who stays in Singapore about new tax regulations in Indonesia. The tax regulations itself is not new, it has been there since 2007, and year 2008 was meant to be the one full year where people learn about it.

Unfortunately, Indonesian who are residents in Singapore have just been briefed about this new tax regulations last week, a mere 5 weeks before it will take effect 1 Jan 2009. There has been lots of emails circulating, rumors, and tons of other unclear directions on what people should and should not do. I’ve done some checks, even visiting Tax Revenue Authority of Indonesia’s website, but alas, no clear information there too.

The whole aim of Indonesian in Singapore finding the information is to avoid double taxation. We are currently already paying tax in Singapore, and to pay tax to Indonesia again is well … odd, not to mention the crazy amount we need to pay.

Put it simply, people in Singapore who earns up to S$40,000 a year only hit 5% tax bracket. In Indonesia, 5% tax bracket only is only meant for those who earn about S$3,500 a year, less than $300 a month, how to live in Singapore like that? Then, what if you earn $40,000 a year? In Indonesia tax regulation, anyone earning more than roughly S$25,000 a year falls under the highest tax bracket, an astonishing 35%. Do I need to repeat that? A crazy 35% !!! Not that we, earning S$25,000 a year, are super-rich people here in Singapore.

Now you can see what makes Indonesian in Singapore crazy about this tax regulations, and why it’s best we should avoid it. It’s in the tax treaty between Singapore and Indonesia anyway. The method to avoid this double taxation has been described in emails around Indonesian here, without anyone have a firm answer on what need to be done. I know about “Certificate of Residence”, what else?

There will be a lot of people going back to Indonesia for Chinese New Year end of January 2009, and it seems like we no longer have free 4 times of fiscal tax. That means we probably have to pay S$200 of fiscal tax if we can’t provide the necessary proof that we are already paying tax here. There has been even rumors that amount could be raised 400% to S$1000.

Now, can you see the messy regulations we have? Couple that with only 5 weeks people generally have now (even much less for those who are going back soon in December, and coming back to Singapore by early January 2009) to settle for any necessary documents, don’t be surprised to see IRAS overwhelmed by requests for “Certificate of Residence”.

Now, I wonder how many people will change their citizenship because of this?

Chicken Pox update

Filed under: Personal Ramblings — hendrikch @ 10:33 pm

It has been a 2-weeks nightmare down with chicken pox. To be exact, it’s probably not a nightmare, felt more like house arrest, where you’re a convicted person in a jail, can’t go anywhere, and you have to wait for your daily meals to be delivered to you. You can’t choose much what you would like to eat, and there are literally TONS of restrictions of what you can and cannot do, what you can and cannot eat.

All the blisters came out from head to toe, hundreds, if not thousands of them. Every single spot on my face, chest, back, scalp, and most of my hands and legs were filled with blisters. Sleeping is not always peaceful, there are only so many positions you can rest your body on that won’t disturb or break those blisters. Bathing and washing your hair and faces turned out to be very tricky too. Applying lotions to all over your body took hours.

Bad news apart, it has been 2.5 weeks since the rash started appearing, and according to doctors and Wikipedia, after all fluid blisters has formed scabs, I should no longer be contagious. There are still many red spots waiting to be healed all over my body and face, scabs to clear, I hope all these marks will be cleared sooner than later. Until then, life goes on, and hopefully this will be my first and my last chicken pox.

During the two weeks I was away from office, a lot has happened. A good mentor, James Bond had his Quantum of Solace, left for a Martini, and I, Agent 86, will certainly miss his tutelage and his story from missions to exotic places like Morocco. Another agent, Liutenant Bond, has decided to leave the agency too.

Finally, thanks to all who have wished me well.

Chicken pox

Filed under: Personal Ramblings — hendrikch @ 11:30 pm

Updates will be pretty slow as I go through this two weeks of period with chicken pox. I have no idea how I get infected with this, but the doctor had told me that I have a chicken pox now. It’s pretty bad to get it already, but it’s even worse when you get it after you’re already an adult.

Anyway, I know I will recover in about two weeks time, it’s just the process and time that I have to go through for my body to develop a natural anti virus. Also, thank God this kind of disease only happen once in a lifetime.

Now, have to resist the urge to *scratch* !!

USA Trip 2008

Filed under: Personal Ramblings, Portables, Travel — hendrikch @ 12:42 am

Early morning this Saturday, 20th, I will be flying to US for holiday for almost 4 weeks, so bear with my blog possible hiatus for 4 weeks. I will be back to Singapore late 14th October.

Destinations have all be planned, including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco, New York, Washington DC, Niagara Falls, Toronto, Montreal, and Taipei. Although I will be travelling for a total 25 days, but the schedule is pretty packed. If you want more details on this trip, read on.

I booked a tour from Nam Ho Singapore for S$2,388 that includes return trip Singapore – Los Angeles and 10-day west coast tour (LA, Vegas, SF, Grand Canyon, Universal Studios Hollywood and Disneyland). One thing I like about their service is customisation. I asked some travel agents, and they told me I have to stick to their travel schedule and itineraries, no change allowed (I’m not paid commission by Nam Ho btw to say this hehe…). I asked for this 10-day tour, then change my return trip from New York instead. The top-up is S$450, fair enough. They’ve also arranged a domestic flight from Los Angeles – New York for S$439, which is slightly cheaper than what I can get in retail sellers like Zuji. Add S$795 for airport taxes, fuel surcharges, etc. and you end up with S$4,072 per person.

That S$4,072 will bring me to LA, Vegas, SF, and around, then flight to NY and back to Singapore. Everything from the moment I reached NY are all free-and-easy. At the moment, New York, Washington DC, Niagara Falls, Toronto, and Montreal are in the plan, but they can always change depending on situations when I reach there. Maybe I should add Wall St. to my schedule as well to see Barclays new-office-to-be at Lehman Brothers.

Temperature will be pretty okay, dropping as low as 5°C for cities that are closer to the north like San Francisco, Toronto, and Montreal, but in cities like New York or Los Angeles, they only dropped as far as 15°C. Taipei’s weather is exactly the same as Singapore, so no worries there.

Preparation are pretty much done at the moment, I have packed enough attires, shorts, jeans, jackets, and sweaters. I even bring one formal attire with tie should I need them in Las Vegas casinos. Gadgets are plenty in this trip. My parents (oh yeah, did I say I’m going there with my parents? US Embassy in Melbourne rejected my brother’s US Visa application, so he can’t go :( ) will bring a video cam and Panasonic Lumix FX8 digital camera, I will bring my Macbook (I’m sure will need my Macbook a lot in this trip), a 320GB portable hard disk (I’m not scared of how many photos will be taken, I’m scared of videos to be taken that could go 4GB/day if our last trip to Australia is any indicator), Canon IXUS 860IS digital camera, Nokia E90 mobile phone, iPod, and all kinds of chargers, batteries, cards, company and banking tokens, etc.

Free wireless Internet access are pretty much guaranteed in US hotels, so I can keep myself connected (to upload photos no less, and update blog), yay !!! I hope to be able to keep up a journal/diary/blog whatever-you-call-it for my trip as soon as I get to hotel, fingers crossed I can do that.

Meanwhile, take care everyone.

lah, leh, loh, meh, mah, @#$@#%

Filed under: Personal Ramblings — hendrikch @ 11:20 pm

Today my colleague asked me what’s the difference between lah, leh, loh, meh, mah, and all other Singlish as we know it.

I’m kinda used to it now, and was unable to tell him in a proper English how these should be used? Maybe I should tell him that he shouldn’t it use it in the first place, shouldn’t I ?

Anyone care to explain what are the differences between all those ?

Tennis Tournament D-day

Filed under: BarCap, Personal Ramblings — hendrikch @ 11:19 pm

As expected, I made a first round exit after losing 6-1, 6-2 to BHL Marine and Chevron Oronite respectively. Against each company, we were supposed to play two doubles and one singles.

The score were:

vs BHL Marine
1st doubles: loss 1-6 (where I played)
2nd doubles: loss 0-6
Single: loss 0-6

vs Chevron
1st doubles: loss 2-6 (where I played)
2nd doubles: won 6-4 !!!
Single: loss 3-6

As we lost to both companies, we were out at first round. BHL Marine and Chevron will fight it out to determine the winner. It seems like BHL Marine is going to win again. We only managed a mere ONE game, so sad.

It has been a weekend full of tennis. I woke up 7.15AM on Saturday, then headed to Paya Lebar for practice, finished about 12 PM, reached back home at Jurong East about 1.30PM, had a lunch, then went out for 3PM meeting at church. It was soon followed by young adults fellowship, and dinner at Ev. Maria’s house at Eunos. I reached home over midnight. I slept almost 2AM in the morning.

Five hours later, I woke up for the tournament, I reached SPE Bukit Timah at 8AM. The game started proper close to 9AM, and I was finished (literally) by 12.30 PM. Reached home about 1PM, had lunch at 2PM, did laundry, took a nap from 3-4PM, then went to church at 5PM.

Now, I’m just waiting for Wimbledon’s men singles finals, just to learn how I should have played this morning :p

All in all, good fun, great game (although I lost). I have one year to practice for next year’s tournament. Looking back at my game, there are few aspects I need to improve A LOT. Serve is key in tournament, especially when you’re playing doubles, and I haven’t got one. I don’t have powerful first serve, nor do I have safe second serve. Patience and consistencies are key too. Those older folks tend to be very patient in playing, while us, the younger ones, tend to try to hit winners, and with that come more unforced errors.

Long Weekend

Filed under: Christianity, Going out, IT Show, Personal Ramblings, Portables — hendrikch @ 11:10 am

As any other weekend, it started on Friday night, I went for Kung Fu Panda movie, which I highly recommend you to watch. It’s hilarious. On Saturday morning, I went for Heryanto (Nyile) and Christine (Santos) wedding until around 2PM, then I headed straight to PC Show at Suntec. I accompanied a friend to get a highly discounted new, just-released HTC Touch Diamond. Retail price is $1,098, but Singtel is selling at $498 for 2-years contract. By the time we reached there about 2.45PM, everywhere in Singtel booth, they put up this sign that read: “HTC Touch Diamond Out of Stock. Contact us for reservation details“. No choice, my friend had to reserve a set which Singtel will only have it ready by Thursday earliest.

For me, I managed to buy a pretty decent $5 laptop sleeve case for my Macbook, as well as an in-ear headphone in Sony MDR-EX32LP for $38.

Few hours later, we arrived back at NBC for young adults fellowship, and after that, we dropped by CK Tang for a while before went to watch The Incredible Hulk. The movie was pretty slow, and there wasn’t enough action to thrill us, the viewers. Only three smiles from me for Hulk :D :D :D :( :(

Movie tickets

I didn’t even realised I was sitting at the same seat number in Lido and GV for different movies on different day, cool coincidence eh?

Today, a friend from Australia came, so I’ll meet her with Dian at Vivo City for lunch, before heading to church for cell group and Sunday service. Hopefully I’ll still have energy to spare to accompany my colleague to Newton Life Church for Mandarin Sunday service. Now I need The Incredible strength :D

Now, if we think that is tiring, imagine our pastor, Rev. Dr. Stephen Tong, who cares so much for us, that he, at the age of 67, will have session for teens at Cibubur from 5 AM today, then preached in Indonesian language at Jakarta at 7 AM, followed by 9.30 AM sermon in Mandarin, then fly to Singapore for Indonesian language sermon at 5 PM (which usually ends about 7.15PM), then continued to Newton Life Church to preach at 7.30 PM. Early Monday morning, he’ll fly back to Jakarta to teach those teens again in Cibubur, and rushed for an afternoon flight to Kuala Lumpur, and continuing his usual journey to Taiwan, Hong Kong, and back to Jakarta on weekend. Phewwwww….. Now, that’s tiring !! If it is not for God and His truth and all of us, no one in the world would ever done that.
