Valentine’s Day

Filed under: Personal Ramblings — hendrikch @ 9:44 pm

Also known as very-expensive-flower-day, Valentine Day is again around the corner. It felt like yesterday when decorations in Singapore were all about Christmas, then soon changed to Chinese New Year theme, and now suddenly shopping malls are having lots of flowers, chocolates, teddy bears, and other pink-colored stuffs on display.

My colleagues have decorated our wall panels in office with Valentine-related content as well, which I have to admit, as usual, brilliantly done. There are history of Valentine Day, tips and tricks to ask him and her out, gift ideas, and lots of other things.

So, what’s your Valentine Day plan, or will it be just like any other Saturday? :-)

Happy Chinese New Year

Filed under: Personal Ramblings — hendrikch @ 12:08 am

I’m in Jakarta from 23rd Jan to 2nd Feb for my Chinese New Year break. Besides obvious activities of visiting relatives, I’ll be shopping for stuffs that I need to bring for Europe trip in May. Jackets, gloves, shawl (not for me), money belt (not for me either), backpack, and lots of other stuffs.

I went to Mall of Indonesia tonight, and all I got was two pieces of wrist-band. I didn’t even a single new shirt for Chinese New Year, but it doesn’t matter as I don’t care that much anyway :-)

So, wish everyone, Happy Ox Year ^.^

Januari

Berat bebanku
Meninggalkanmu
Separuh nafas jiwaku
Sirna…

Bukan salahmu
Apa dayaku
Mungkin benar cinta sejati
Tak berpihak
Pada kita

Reff:
Kasihku
Sampai disini kisah kita
Jangan tangisi keadaannya
Bukan karena kita berbeda

Dengarkan
Dengarkan lagu…..lagu ini
Melodi rintihan hati ini
Kisah kita berakhir di Januari

Selamat tinggal kisah sejatiku
Wow….pergilah

Year 2009 Resolutions and Goals

Filed under: Christianity, GRIIS, Personal Ramblings — hendrikch @ 10:14 pm

The last time I did all these resolutions and goals was three years ago, in 2006, most of which I didn’t manage to complete. I didn’t do any for 2007 and 2008, and I think it’s a good time to start again what has been ignored for some time. Here they are:

1. More regular Quiet Time and Prayers. This one has always been a struggle over the years, but it is not something that one can give up trying. Target: 80%.

2. Finish reading FOUR books this year that are at least 100 pages-thick. Not comics, not Reader’s Digest, but proper books.

3. Keep serving in young adults fellowship and start serving in church’s adults service. I think can start from usher. Not sure if choir will accept this croaked voice of mine.

4. Learn evangelizing other non-believers. The Word I listened yesterday was: If I don’t spread the Gospel, I am more cruel than people in hell !! (Luke 16:19-31)

5. To attend a service in GRII main church, Katedral Mesias (Messiah Cathedral), in Kemayoran, Jakarta, every single Sunday I will be in Jakarta. Hope to get my whole family together as well when I go.

6. Double up my investment portfolios while keeping six-month expenses in cash. Depending on travel plans and gadgets expenses this year, this goal could be in jeopardy. So far, there has been potential trip to Europe, potential for a new LCD monitor and potential for a new digital camera.

7. Call back home at least twice a month.

What do you think of mine? Have you set what you would like to achieve this year?

Expenses on Gadgets in 2008

Filed under: Mac OS, Personal Ramblings, Portables, Technology — hendrikch @ 9:07 pm

We’re at the end of 2008 now, and I’ve just finished consolidating all my electronics (gadgets) purchases in 2008.

I did a checkpoint half-way through this year back in May, and up to that point, I’ve already spent S$2,500. Move forward to end of year today, that number has ballooned up to S$4,167. Singaporean says *jialat liao*

Looking back, I’m not sure I could have spent much less than what was needed. I’ll run through them from the most expensive ones, and you tell me if I’ve bought more than I should?

Apple Macbook (white)
Committed at S$1,400 for 30 months installment, I’ve paid 9 months of S$46.67 each for a total of S$420 this year. Twenty-one more months to go. So far, this laptop was the one that made me switched to Mac, and it has been a useful laptop as I travelled around the globe this year. Along the months, I have upgraded the RAM from 1GB to 4GB for about S$55, “accidentally” upgraded the HDD from 120GB to 320GB for S$95, and bought Applecare for S$200 (from S$446 retail price) to extend its warranty cover until 2011.

Compaq Presario V3638
Bought this for my mum. The original price was S$999, but after adding RAM upgrade, minus GST claim, etc., I ended up with S$1,108.95.

Canon Digital IXUS 860IS
In need of a digital camera for my USA trip in September, I bought this one for S$519, complete with all goodies I need. I added $70 for an extra original Canon battery.

Apple iPod Nano 4G – 8GB
Apple store in Singapore is selling this for S$248, but Apple store in New York was selling for US$149. With USD-SGD exchange rate as low as 1.40 back then, it was cheaper to buy in New York.

Western Digital My Passport 320GB
As my Macbook 120GB storage wouldn’t be enough to store and backup photos and videos taken during USA trip, this external hard drive is the cheapest and easiest way to have more storage on the road. Got it for S$149.

Logitech v470 Bluetooth mouse
This excellent mouse retails for S$85 and after all these months, the last time I checked last week, some shops are still selling it for S$89. I got two of these from eBay for a total of S$85, so you’d consider I got 50% discount. I uses one, and my mum is using the other one. The pair of battery I put in since August are still working as of today. Amazing battery life.

Starhub re-contract
This time, I decided not to change my phone during re-contract. Instead, I simply recontract, and sold the new phone off for a S$362 profit. Pretty good.

Miscellaneous
There are other sub-$50 stuffs like web-cam for my mum, USB hub, earphone, etc.

What do you think? Could I have spent any less this year? How?

Southern Ridges Walk to Henderson Waves to Vivo City

Filed under: Going out, Personal Ramblings — hendrikch @ 2:23 pm

After a tiring and not-enough-sleep weeks, I have no idea how on earth I agreed to join for a morning walk to Southern Ridges instead of sleeping at home.

Let’s strike a pose before we all started walking.

We started the walk from Southern Ridges, just opposite Hort Park, walking through the very long bridge towards Vivo City. The bridge was so long, sometimes I wonder if I get lost. Then I saw this sign.

hmmm… If I take this staircase to exit to earth, where am I now?

Slightly over half an hour later, we had walked through the whole long bridge to the first checkpoint.

Soon after, we reached Henderson Waves, a structure that was made to look like waves. When you’re there, beware of crazy and wild animal like this one.

The complete gang who sacrificed their sleeping time for a walk in the morning. Ten of us, nine in the picture, one behind the camera hihihi …

We finally reached Vivo City close to 12pm, and what’s else were on our mind but not lunch? *sluurrrpp*

Gathering at Ivory heights

Filed under: Going out, GRIIS, Personal Ramblings — hendrikch @ 3:25 pm

To celebrate Dewi’s freedom from her exam, as well as early Christmas, she volunteered herself to cook dinner for many people. There were about a dozen people invited, including me *of course* to her house for dinner and games last Friday.

Games including Uno Stacko

Mini Mahjong

and Mickey Mouse Monopoly

Dinner were pasta with LOTS of cheese and vegetables, then carrot and potato soup, with chocolate cake for desserts. You can tell how delicious the soup was that Alvin finished a BIG bowl.

It was a very fun evening, especially when Akbar dropped the Uno Stacko that went to 29 layers if I didn’t count wrongly.

Complete photos in http://hendrikch.smugmug.com/gallery/6753757_tF7Uf

Thanks to all who came and especially to those who have prepared the dinner for all of us :-D Arigatouuuu……
