Happy Chinese New Year and Happy Birthday (to me)

Filed under: Going out — hendrikch @ 10:56 pm

It’s a *bit* belated post. We all in Singapore, any many other countries, get two days of public holiday from last Thursday, so we effectively had four days of long break. As with all my break and weekends, I had a busy, fully packed days. These four days were no exception. My big and extended family members reached Singapore on Wednesday evening, and we had a reunion dinner at my sister’s place that night.

The first day of Chinese New Year on Thursday happened to be my birthday, or my birthday happen to be a public holiday, or …. you know …. It’s the first time that the government gave a public holiday to celebrate my birthday and my company gave me a half-day off the previous day. I’m truly honoured hehe… smile_tongue Anyway, I brought my whole big family to Esplanade, then we saw this gigantic plastic decoration opposite Esplanade.

Not sure what god this one depicts?

They have this Hua Yi Festival in Esplanade

The Friday was planned to visit Sentosa Flowers 2008 at Sentosa of course. To our horror upon reaching Vivo City, the queue for Sentosa Express train ticket was unbelievably long. From the ticket counter just beside Food Republic, people are making snake-like queue in the building, that extends all the way to outside of the building. My guess-timate of the queue will probably 400 persons. Even though the queue moved quite “fast”, we cancelled the idea of visiting Sentosa that day as we’re sure it’ll be *very* crowded there. Even we can somehow managed to reach Sentosa, we’re not sure how we can easily come back to the main land in the afternoon or evening.

The queue outside continues all the way to this …

That plan was quickly changed to East Coast instead. No flowers there, but still lots of fun. Before that, we need to recharge. Out of those few restaurants that are open that day, we settled for The Chicken Rice Shop. It’s surprisingly good, and don’t let the name fool you, they sell much more than just chicken rice. Six of us ordered $56 family feast meal that gives you half-chicken, one big plate of bean-sprout, one big bowl of fishballs, one plate of kai-lan vegetables, one jug of Pepsi, one plate of Japanese tofu, one big bowl of nata-de-coco, one-quarter of honey BBQ chicken, and few more menus that I can’t remember right now. A certain value for money I feel.

Before we headed to East Coast, we went around Vivo City, and saw this great painter, presumably from China.

This man here draw the lines on the painting using hot metal to burn the paper, creating black colour lines on the paper, very impressive.

To be continued …

Outing at Singapore Botanical Garden

Filed under: Going out, GRIIS — hendrikch @ 11:22 pm

GRIIS young adults and teen fellowship gathered for an outing at Singapore Botanical Garden yesterday afternoon. We started about 3.15 PM, we sang songs, we listened to sharing and God’s Word, followed by fun games and dinner. Here are some photos and videos that I took, all using N95.

The first game was “Tree, Squirrel, and Hunter“. If it was to be inspired by Enchanted the movie, maybe we would have called it “Tree, Chipmunk, and Evil Queen” haha… :p Those squirrels who didn’t get tree to live in during those games were punished to dance as the rest sang along.

Those who get punishment after the first game.

It was shortly followed by sharing, first from Jo who will be leaving for Denmark this month, and Ezra together with his brothers and mother back to Jakarta.

Short sharing from Ezra before he left Singapore, for a long time

Kau sahabatku, kau saudaraku, tiada yang dapat memisahkan kita

Sing-a-song in a beautiful garden

Outing is never complete without a group photo
The turn-out was about 75 to 80 persons. I personally was very thankful for the weather, that it didn’t rain.

Singapore Open golf tournament

Filed under: Going out — hendrikch @ 11:22 pm

Not every day you get a chance to watch a golf tournament, so when they held Singapore Open this week in Serapong Course at Sentosa Golf Club, I went there, walking in the huge grass course, seeing how top world players play golf. They hit some amazing shots, how they could hit the golf ball from 200-300 metres away, and yet the ball landed less than 10 metres from the hole, all in a sunny but very windy weather this afternoon. You get to see professional players like Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh, and Angel Cabrera (who won Singapore Open title today and US$4 million cash prize, after fending off Vijay by only one shot) play. Initially, I only expected about 200 people will come to watch golf, after all, it’s not a popular sport like soccer, but to my amazement, when I reached there, I saw thousands of people walking around the golf field, following their favorite player from the side.

The crowd are “professional” too. When a player is about to take his shot, the marshals will raise a sign that says “Quiet please“, and all the crowd will suddenly turn quiet. Very very quiet in fact, the crowd sitting/standing behind the ropes barriers don’t even move, until the player has taken his shot, then crowd will turn noisy again, clapping.

Ex-SMUK 5 – 1999 batch in Singapore reunion

Filed under: Dining, Going out — hendrikch @ 9:57 pm

It has been eight years since we graduated from SMUK 5 back in 1999. Since then, some of us have ventured to study in NTU or NUS. Some have gone to other countries to study, while most people stayed in Jakarta for further study. Last Friday, after over a month trying to organize a reunion for those in Singapore, most of us managed to gather in Modesto’s Vivo City. So glad that so many people turned up, some already brought their husband/wife/husband-to-be/wife-to-be. Well, you get the idea. It was fun, really fun, and we must do this more often :)

After pizzas, pastas, ice creams, crepes, the bill only amount to $14 per person, a very reasonable amount for this kind of place :)

Here are some shots we took.

Filed under: Going out — hendrikch @ 9:41 pm

Some random photos I took in Sentosa at night. Very nice. The first time I took the Sentosa Express LRT, I tried using the ez-link, it was rejected :p. I didn’t know that I have to buy $3 special ez-link-like special ticket. cheyyyy…. I thought can just use ez-link.

Movies and Dining Out

Filed under: Dining, Going out, Movies — hendrikch @ 12:18 am

After spending record expenses last month for dining and movies, I was telling myself that this month, I must not spend as much as last month. However, any hopes of curbing expenses this month were dashed as early as my dinner on the first day of July. $12 at MOS Burger . That was last Friday.
After watching Batman Begins two weeks ago, on Saturday eight of us went to watch War of the Worlds at Bishan. We had our dinner at McD before the movie and our supper at Cafe Cartel afterwards. In Cafe Cartel, I had Eastside Brownie Stack. It was two pieces of brownies with rich chocolate topped with a vanilla ice cream, yummy
Yesterday, I had lunch with my colleagues at Secret Recipe for a farewell meal. It was a $17 set lunch for a main course, drink, soup of the day, and guess what, another brownie.
Today, after lunch, I dropped by the new mr. bean opened in Tanjong Pagar. I bought their $1.20 soya-ice-cream. Tasted like McD’s ice cream cone.

Big Walk

Filed under: Going out, Singapore — hendrikch @ 5:14 pm

Saying it’s a Big Walk is an under-statement. This should be called Gigantic Massive Mammoth Immense Walk!!!! Okay, I exxagerate here, but walking 10 km was not as easy as I thought. We woke up at 6.15 AM, and reached there almost 8.30 AM. We literally walked from National Stadium, turned in Nicoll Highway, went towards Esplanade, and made a U-turn at Fullerton, and back to National Stadium. I initially thought we could have finished the 10-km walk in 2 hours, but in the end, we took close to 3 hours to reach the finish point.
So, who went? Myself, Bayu, Momon, Eric, Asen, Anton, Melinda, and Patricia. We even saw Batman, Spiderman, and few people who wore fruits like tomato, grapes, etc. After the event, we went Serangoon for lunch, and back at home now. Bathed already, now typing blog, I should rest for a while, before going church later.
Below are the photos taken during our Big Walk by our trusty Asen’s Powershot G5. Click the respective photos for bigger-sized pictures. Complete original-size pictures are shared in my Imagestation gallery.

Update: Asen and Eric has put up their post on Big Walk in their blog as well. Check them out.
