2010 blogging in review

Filed under: Blog — hendrikch @ 9:35 pm

It has been a very quiet year, and I’m surprised to see that my blog is doing pretty well according to WordPress. That’s strange.

Anyway, here’s the stats they sent me to my email.

The stats helper monkeys at WordPress.com mulled over how this blog did in 2010, and here’s a high level summary of its overall blog health:

Indonesian is a popular language

Filed under: Blog, News — hendrikch @ 11:27 pm

Guess what, after English (obviously), Indonesian is the third most-popular language in WordPress blogs after Spanish and Portuguese.

Random facts picked up from http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2008/05/02/april-monotone/ They said: 30% of pageviews go to blogs in languages other than English. The most popular? Spanish, Portuguese, and Indonesian.

Maybe I can try switching to Indonesian language some time :-D

Malaysia former prime minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has started blogging. Wonder what will be discussed there. One thing for sure, there are thousand of comments in each post. Compare that to hendrikch.com where my posts averages zero comment :(

Blog etiquette

Filed under: Blog — hendrikch @ 11:19 pm

Do’s and Don’ts of Blogging. This week, I was asked to provide some opinions about blogging that will be published in church’s December newsletter. In the questionnaire, there were a couple of questions, and one of them was: “What are the Do’s and Don’ts of Blogging?” Since, it was for a newsletter, I made it short, but here I would like to outline them even further. Feel free to add and comment on what you think.

Do’s:
- Do know what you’re blogging for. Be it personal, stories, photos, sharing, anything. If you don’t know what you’re blogging for, it’ll most likely take out the fun in blogging, and you’ll stop blogging after the first excitement wears off.
- Update frequently enough, but it doesn’t have to be everyday. Quality is more important than quantity. I have seen people update their blog twice a year. If you don’t update enough, people will tend to forget that your blog exists after a while. Of course, don’t blog everyday about what you eat, what time you wake up, you get the idea.
- Be tactful on what you write, your blog can be read by everyone around the world, and I mean everyone, and searchable by Google.
- Do respect your readers, respond to their comments. Have a conversation with your readers.
- A bit technical, but have RSS for your blog, it’ll help people to follow your blog updates.
- In summary, use your blog for the blessing of others.

Don’ts:
- Don’t slap advertisements all over the place to earn money. Blog is to share, not to earn money.
- Don’t care what people think of what you write, it’s your blog, not a magazine or newspaper company. Still, be tactful of what you write.
- Don’t share other’s personal lives without asking permission, thus violating their privacy.

Any comments? Anything you want to add?

Countdown to 20,000 hits

Filed under: Blog — hendrikch @ 5:06 pm

My first website was created wayyyy back in 1999 with hit counter started from 1. Second, third, and fourth designs soon followed during my NTU days. Version 5 was born when I started to join the blogging world back in April 2004. Version 5 started with hit counter around 9000. So, if you calculate it, it took me five years from 1999 to 2004 for that 9000 hits.
Starting with version 5, as blog’s nature, contents is more important than website designs. And your responses were very good. 900 hits over the first month of my blog, back at Blogdrive. Now at Tabulas, still thinking whether this should be called version 6, we are closing in to my 20,000th hit. Now, if you read this post, take a quick look at lower right corner, check if you are the 20,000 visitors here. If you are, post in the comment, and I’ll think what I can reward you with
Comparatively, four versions of websites took five years for 9000 hits, and one version of blog only needed two years for 11,000 hits. Thanks everyone for the support over the years. You are the reason I kept going.
Lastly, at this milestone, I would like to take this opportunity to ask you, my readers, for feedbacks, comments, encouragements, critics, and anything that you may want to say about my blog.

Introducing Titin’s Blog

Filed under: Blog — hendrikch @ 4:36 pm

She said it’s personal blog, but well, after exchanging words with her, she let me link her blog here. hehehe… She is one of my best friend while I was in my university years in NTU, one who has helped me a lot going through NTU, hehehe… We kinda seldom exchange words after we both graduated and found our jobs, but just recently talked to her again after the Chinese New Year gathering we had. Well, so much I can tell for now, you can read the rest in her blog. So, go, visit her blog, and of course encourage her to write more often ;)

Blogdrive or Tabulas?

Filed under: Blog — hendrikch @ 4:25 pm

I said in the Mini chat-room or Tagboard that the main reason I am looking to move to Tabulas is that Tabulas has email notification when someone reply your comments. This feature is not available in Blogdrive until now.

However, considering the trouble of moving from Blogdrive to Tabulas, I was thinking of any workaround that may solve this problem. Here is what I come out with and one which I need your help.

1. On the right hand column, on top of my counter, you should see a text box saying “If you want to be updated on this weblog Enter your email here:”. If you want to be notified when I update my blog with new entries, please enter your email address here, so whenever I post a new entry, you will be notified via email. Currently only a few people have registered their email address for this notification.

2. I have added the “Most Recent Comments” section on the right hand column, which I hope is useful enough for my readers to know what are the latest comments in my blog, instead of you checking each and every post to see if there are any new comments, or if anyone had reply your comments. This will not be live-updated though, since this section is updated manually by me everytime I visit my blog. However, I hope that this small addition is useful enough for you.

In the end, I concluded that these two steps should be enough to justify my decision NOT to move to Tabulas, but to say with Blogdrive. We’ll see how these two goes in the next few weeks. In the mean time, register your email address for that notification thing, will ya? Thanks.
