COMEX 2008 will be coming next Thursday, 28 August 2008, and I already have a shopping list. Some are need-to-have, some are only good-to-have. Here they are in order of priority and importance:
- NEED-TO-HAVE. A new digital camera to bring for USA Trip in September. Top of the list is Canon IXUS 860IS. Currently, shops are generally selling at S$545 with 1x4GB SD card and extra battery. Hopefully COMEX this time round will have a better deal.
- NEED-TO-HAVE. A portable harddisk, again for USA Trip. Having a laptop while travelling is great, but what’s more important is its backup, as if the hard drive crashed on my flight back, it’ll be a disaster to lose all photos taken during the whole trip. I consider this $100-$140 spent as insurance paid against data lost during my trip.
Considering Seagate FreeAgent Go simply because of its 5-year warranty.
- GOOD-TO-HAVE. Another 2GB of Kingston DDR2-RAM 667MHz SO-DIMM to add on top of the 2GB currently installed in my Macbook, to make it 4GB. It should be about $55.
- GOOD-TO-HAVE. A mouse to accompany my Macbook. I really want Logitech V470 Cordless Laser Mouse for Notebooks @ $85 I think the last time I checked. What I really like about this mouse is it’s Bluetooth, so no need to use any USB port. It has everything I want except the price hehe…. :p
However, due to its high price, I’m also considering other mice.
CordlessWired
What do you think on my choices? Any better recommendations? Are you planning to get anything this COMEX show at Suntec? I know a certain someone who’s getting an LCD monitor. And I also know someone who will be dying to recommend a dSLR instead :p

Have you tried wireless mouse before? They can be quite annoying.. I had it for a couple of weeks, and decided the old-wired mouse is still much better. I guess it’s ok for daily usage, but if you’re playing computer game that requires high precision and response time, like CS and dota, stick with cables… my 2 cents.

about upgrading the RAM of ur macbook to 4GB, just be sure to check the maximum RAM it can access. For mine, i upgraded it to 3GB only since the maximum is 3.3. im assuming the same for all types of macbooks. but again, i can be wrong.

@Jo!: i tried wireless mouse before and I didn’t like it because it’s heavy, but that was with a ball mouse. I hope laser mouse without a ball is fine? It’ll be for daily usage, not for playing games. No games in Mac :p I still always go back to Windows for games.
In fact, I just tried my colleague’s Logitech MX1000 today, and that was big bulky and heavy.
Well, probably need to re-think about cordless mouse after all.
@pat: According to http://www.apple.com/sg/macbook/specs.html, two SO-DIMM slots support up to 4GB. On your 3.3GB, as I found it odd, I did some research. It seems like Macbook prior to 2008 had this limitation. Apple only officially support 2GB, though you’ll see 3.3GB when you put in 4GB.
Macbooks from early 2008 that came with Intel Penryn 45nm processors already support up to 4GB. Thanks for the warning though
The details are in http://guides.macrumors.com/Understanding_Intel_Mac_RAM

try the small razer pro mouse if you want portability

And about the camera, why Canon 860? any particular reason – or just brand loyalty? Even with Canon, I thought the newer model would be Canon 90? I am too considering buying a point-and-shoot, but a recommendation from a friend and several reviews sway me to Fuji F100fd. Seems like it performs better in high ISO, low light and off course, higher MP and optical zoom can come handy.

I have all your need-to-haves and good-to-haves. What does that mean now?
Comment by distinque — August 27, 2008 @ 10:58 pm
@sentosa: help me check the prices first okay? ^_^
@stewie: Razer mouse? never use before, I have always stick with Logitech
I can check it out on Friday though.
@distinque: errrrrr….. any comments? good/no good? Or if you want to sell it 2nd hand to me for cheaper price? ^_^
@Jo!: reason? not brand loyalty, as I’ve never bought a Canon before.
Why Canon? coz Canon is #1 for P&S cameras for the past 4 years I think, and so far comments from other people are pretty good.
Why Canon 860? coz it’s the ONLY one P&S that starts from 28mm (wide angle). The rest starts from 35mm.
Why now? I wish I could wait until after Canon has announced a new line of cameras next month after Photokina (expected, there’ll be a 870/880IS), but I can wait no longer as my trip is only 3 weeks away.
Newer models are 960 and 970IS, but both starts at 35mm
As for F100fd, errrr…. not sure, never interested in Fuji cameras (maybe it’s all about brand name). Comparing the specs:
8MP vs 12MP? I don’t care as much.
High ISO? I admit Fuji seems to have better ISO and low-light performance.
Optical zoom? Yeah, I wish.
Sensor size are different as well: 1/2.5″ in 860IS vs 1/1.6″ in F100fd.
The rest, I can’t comment further. On paper, F100fd seems to win hands down.
