This is great stuff, but it will get very complicated for numbers with larger digits, like 987 x 789.

true, but still interesting nonetheless.
just curious if this thing has been invented long long time back and was just only published, or someone had just invented this new method.

I’d be keen to bet it has been known for a while, though I don’t know for sure. Because it is so simple and easy to conceive, it’s probable even the Greeks may have known it thousands of years ago. It is, as you say, interesting, but I think it is limited. Very cool though. A definite party trick.
